On a sunny Saturday morning we loaded the girls in the boat at Cotton's Bayou in Orange Beach, AL and set out for lunch at Pirate's Cove in Josephine, AL. It is a five-mile boat ride across Bayou St. John and Amica Bay. You can also get there by car.
Once there we were greeted by all manner of DOGS...
and pirate-y staff...
No need to come here if you're in a hurry. The sign reads "Standing here WILL NOT make your food come FASTER". Yes, those are horses' bottoms hanging around that sign.
More decor...
See the server in the lower right corner of the picture? I really thought she was going to make me walk the plank for taking that picture. She called me on it.
Pirate Girl: "Did you take my picture?"
Me: *shivering me timbers* "Um, nooo...I think I just got the top of your head." (At the time I REALLY thought I only got the top of her head because I was trying to focus on the flags!)
Pirate Girl: "Oh."
And off she went to terrify some other unsuspecting diner who was in awe of her off-beat surroundings. Or, maybe I was the only one who felt out of place.
Did I mention there were dogs?
You see, dogs can't read signs like this...
The burgers were seasoned perfectly and the best I've ever eaten. The fries were more like potato logs but were not soggy at all. The chicken strips were even good. The food was definitely worth the wait.
Not that I noticed how long the wait was. The interesting people and dogs were not the only entertainment. There was a live band on the deck who played a lot of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and outlaw music. They were really good.
After we devoured our lunch we let the girls play in the sand and water.
Well, one girl. The other wanted no part of it. There were too many dogs to watch.
There were also a lot of boats.
And really friendly boaters. They're posing for us...
As we were sitting at a picnic table on the beach we overheard a conversation between two ladies sitting by us. Turns out of them is from my tiny home county and now lives just a few minutes from me. Small world!
That wasn't the only small world moment I had that day. As we were walking back to our boat a sweet lady was telling us how cute our girls are. I immediately recognized her. She's from my hometown and I haven't seen her in over 17 years! Hey, Robyn!
Go to Pirate's cove for a different dining experience and delicious food. Don't go if you have an aversion to eating with dogs. Over all it was a good time and I would go again to eat another burger!
